ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a prevalent malignant tumor of the gastrointestinal system. ZNF710 is a transcription factor (TF), and zinc finger protein 710 (ZNF710)-AS1-201 is an immune-related long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is upregulated in GC cells. AIM: To assess the correlation between ZNF710-AS1-201 and immune microenvironment features and to investigate the roles of ZNF710-AS1-201 in the invasion and metastasis processes of GC cells. METHODS: We obtained data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Wujin Hospital. We assessed cell growth, migration, invasion, and programmed cell death using cell counting kit-8, EdU, scratch, Transwell, and flow cytometry assays. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to identify the potential downstream targets of ZNF710-AS1-201. RESULTS: In GC tissues with low ZNF710-AS1-201 expression, immunoassays detected significant infiltration of various antitumor immune cells, such as memory CD8 T cells and activated CD4 T cells. In the low-expression group, the half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) of 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin, gemcitabine, and trametinib were lower, whereas the IC50s of dasatinib and vorinostat were higher. The malignant degree of GC was higher and the stage was later in the high-expression group. Additionally, patients with high expression of ZNF710-AS1-201 had lower overall survival and disease-free survival rates. In vitro, the overexpression of ZNF710-AS1-201 greatly enhanced growth, metastasis, and infiltration while suppressing cell death in HGC-27 cells. In contrast, the reduced expression of ZNF710-AS1-201 greatly hindered cell growth, enhanced apoptosis, and suppressed the metastasis and invasion of MKN-45 cells. The expression changes in ZNF710 were significant, but the corresponding changes in isocitrate dehydrogenase-2, Semaphorin 4B, ARHGAP10, RGMB, hsa-miR-93-5p, and ZNF710-AS1-202 were not consistent or statistically significant after overexpression or knockdown of ZNF710-AS1-201, as determined by qRT-PCR. CONCLUSION: Immune-related lncRNA ZNF710-AS1-201 facilitates the metastasis and invasion of GC cells. It appears that ZNF710-AS1-201 and ZNF710 have potential as effective targets for therapeutic intervention in GC. Nevertheless, it is still necessary to determine the specific targets of the ZNF710 TF.

ABSTRACT

Perception of pathogen/microbial-associated molecular patterns (P/MAMPs) by plant cell surface receptors leads to a sustained burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS), a key feature of P/MAMP-triggered immunity (PTI). Here we report that P/MAMP recognition leads to a rapid nitrosative burst, initiating the accumulation of nitric oxide (NO), subsequently leading to S-nitrosylation of the receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase (RLCK), botrytis-induced kinase 1 (BIK1), at Cys80. This redox-based, posttranslational modification, promotes the phosphorylation of BIK1, subsequently resulting in BIK1 activation and stabilization. Further, BIK1 S-nitrosylation increases its physical interaction with RBOHD, the source of the apoplastic oxidative burst, promoting ROS formation. Our data identify mechanistic links between rapid NO accumulation and the expression of PTI, providing insights into plant immunity.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effect of vestibular rehabilitation exercise platform based on browser server(BS) mode on vertigo symptoms, balance ability and anxiety of vertigo patients. Methods:The clinical data of 110 patients with vertigo in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. The patients who received routine vestibular rehabilitation exercise from March 2019 to may 2020 were set as the control group (55 cases), and the patients who received vestibular rehabilitation exercise platform guidance based on BS mode from June 2020 to December 2021 were set as the study group (55 cases). The scores of Fugl Meyer balance assessment scale(FMA), hospital anxiety and Depression Scale(had), vertigo disorder scale(DHI), quality of life scale(SF-36), vertigo visual analog scale(VAS), Berg Balance Scale(BBS), rehabilitation treatment effect and rehabilitation exercise compliance were compared between the two groups. Results:before rehabilitation exercise, there was no significant difference in the scores of DHI, VAS, FMA, BBS, had and SF-36 between the two groups(P>0.05). After 3 months of exercise, the scores of DHI, had and vas in the study group were lower than those in the control group, and the scores of FMA, BBS and SF-36 in the study group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). The excellent and good rate of rehabilitation efficacy and treatment compliance rate in the study group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion:The vestibular rehabilitation exercise platform based on CS mode can improve the limb movement and balance ability of patients with vertigo, reduce the vertigo symptoms and psychological anxiety, and improve the rehabilitation treatment effect and compliance of patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Fertility preservation treatment is increasingly essential for patients with apical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) and early endometrial cancer (EEC) worldwide. Complete regression (CR) is the main endpoint of this treatment. Accurately predicting CR and implementing appropriate interventions during treatment are crucial for these patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study involving 193 patients diagnosed with atypical AEH or EEC, enrolled from January 2012 to March 2022 at our center. We evaluated 24 clinical parameters as candidate predictors and employed LASSO regression to develop a prediction model for CR. Subsequently, a nomogram was constructed to predict CR after the treatment. We evaluated the performance of the nomogram using receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) to assess its predictive accuracy. Additionally, we employed cumulative curves to determine the CR rate among patients. RESULTS: Out of the 193 patients, 173 achieved CR after undergoing fertility preservation treatment. We categorized features with similar properties and provided a list of formulas based on their coefficients. The final model, named GLOBAL (including basic information, characteristics, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, immunohistochemistry, histological type, and medication), comprised eight variables identified using LASSO regression. A nomogram incorporating these eight risk factors was developed to predict CR. The GLOBAL model exhibited an AUC of 0.907 (95% CI 0.828-0.969). Calibration plots demonstrated a favorable agreement between the predicted probability by the GLOBAL model and actual observations in the cohort. The cumulative curve analysis revealed varying cumulative CR rates among patients in the eight subgroups. Categorized analysis demonstrated significant diversity in the effects of the GLOBAL model on CR among patients with different total points (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: We have developed and validated a model that significantly enhances the predictive accuracy of CR in AEH and EEC patients seeking fertility preservation treatment.

ABSTRACT

Huntington disease (HD) predominantly affects the brain causing a mixed movement disorder, cognitive decline and behavioural abnormalities. It also causes a peripheral phenotype involving skeletal muscle. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported in tissues of HD models, including skeletal muscle, and lymphoblasts and fibroblasts cultures from HD patients. Mutant huntingtin protein (mutHTT) expression can impair mitochondrial quality control and accelerate mitochondrial ageing. Here we obtained fresh human skeletal muscle, a post-mitotic tissue expressing the mutated HTT allele at physiological levels since birth, and primary cell lines from HTT CAG repeat expansion mutation carriers and matched healthy volunteers to examine whether such a mitochondrial phenotype exists in human HD. Using ultra-deep mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing, we show an accumulation of mtDNA mutations affecting oxidative phosphorylation. Tissue proteomics indicate impairments in mtDNA maintenance with increased mitochondrial biogenesis of less efficient oxidative phosphorylation (lower complex I and IV activity). In full-length mutHTT expressing primary human cell lines, fission inducing mitochondrial stress resulted in normal mitophagy. In contrast, expression of high levels of N-terminal mutHTT fragments promoted mitochondrial fission and resulted in slower, less dynamic mitophagy. Expression of high levels of mutHTT fragments due to somatic nuclear HTT CAG instability can thus affect mitochondrial network dynamics and mitophagy leading to pathogenic mtDNA mutations. We show that life-long expression of mutant HTT causes a mitochondrial phenotype indicative of mtDNA instability in fresh post-mitotic human skeletal muscle. Thus, genomic instability may not be limited to nuclear DNA where it results in somatic expansion of HTT CAG repeat length in particularly vulnerable cells, such as striatal neurons. In addition to efforts targeting the causative mutation promoting mitochondrial health may be a complementary strategy in treating diseases with DNA instability, such as HD.

ABSTRACT

Endometrioid carcinoma with sex cord-like formations and hyalinization of the uterine corpus, or corded and hyalinized endometrioid adenocarcinoma (CHEC), is a rare morphological variant of endometrioid carcinoma, for which there is limited literature and few cases reports. Most researchers tend to consider CHEC as a low-grade cancer with a favorable prognosis. Full-staging surgery is the primary choice for this disease, and no case of CHEC has been previously reported to be treated conservatively. Here, we present the following case to explore the possibility of fertility-preserving treatment for young women with CHEC. A 23-year-old nulliparous patient diagnosed with presumed stage IA CHEC received fertility-sparing treatment at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University and got a complete response (CR) after 10 months of conservative treatment. The patient subsequently became pregnant spontaneously, successfully conceived, and gave birth to a healthy male neonate without any sign of recurrence during 37 months follow-up after CR. The patient's postpartum follow-up is continuing. Presently, CHEC is not included in the fertility-sparing field of any available guidelines. This case indicates that fertility-sparing treatment may be an option for highly selected patients with CHEC. Continuous follow-up remains mandatory to observe long-term outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the impact of the metabolic risk score (MRS) on both the time to achieve complete remission (CR) of fertility-sparing treatments for atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) and early EC patients. METHODS: Univariate and multivariate logistic analyses were employed to identify independent risk factors affecting the time to CR with patients at our center. These factors were subsequently incorporated into receiver operator characteristic curve analysis and decision curve analysis to assess the predictive accuracy of time to CR. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier analysis was utilized to determine the cumulative CR rate for patients. RESULTS: The 173 patients who achieved CR following fertility preservation treatment (FPT) were categorized into three subgroups based on their time to CR (<6, 6-9, >9 months). Body mass index (hazard ratio [HR]=0.20; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.03, 0.38; p=0.026), MRS (HR=0.31; 95% CI=0.09, 0.52; p=0.005), insulin resistance (HR=1.83; 95% CI=0.05, 3.60; p=0.045), menstruation regularity (HR=3.77; 95% CI=1.91, 5.64; p=0.001), polycystic ovary syndrome (HR=-2.16; 95% CI=-4.03, -0.28; p=0.025), and histological type (HR=0.36; 95% CI=0.10, 0.62; p=0.005) were identified as risk factors for time to CR, with MRS being the independent risk factor (HR=0.29; 95% CI=0.02, 0.56; p=0.021). The inclusion of MRS significantly enhanced the predictive accuracy of time to CR (area under the curve [AUC]=0.789 for Model 1, AUC=0.862 for Model 2, p=0.032). Kaplan-Meier survival curves revealed significant differences in the cumulative CR rate among different risk groups. CONCLUSION: MRS emerges as a novel evaluation system that substantially enhances the predictive accuracy for the time to achieve CR in AEH and early EC patients seeking fertility preservation.

ABSTRACT

To reveal dysregulated metabolism hallmark that was associated with a severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) phenotype. In this study, LC-MS/MS-based targeted metabolomics was used to analyze plasma samples from 106 acute pancreatitis (AP) patients (34 mild, 38 moderate, and 34 severe) admitted within 48 hours from abdominal pain onset and 41 healthy controls. Temporal metabolic profiling was performed on days 1, 3, and 7 after admission. A random forest (RF) was performed to significantly determine metabolite differences between SAP and non-SAP (NSAP) groups. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) and immunohistochemistry were conducted for the examination of pancreatic metabolite and metabolic enzyme alterations, respectively, on necrosis and paracancerous tissues. Simultaneously determination of serum and pancreatic tissue metabolic alterations using an L-ornithine-induced AP model to discover metabolic commonalities. Twenty-two significant differential metabolites screened by RF were selected to build an accurate model for the prediction of SAP from NSAP (AUC = 0.955). Six of 22 markers were found by MSI with significant alterations in pancreatic lesions, reduced ornithine-related metabolites were also identified. The abnormally expressed arginase2 and ornithine transcarboxylase were further discovered in combination with time-course metabolic profiling in the SAP animal models, the decreased ornithine catabolites were found at a late stage of inflammation, but ornithine-associated metabolic enzymes were activated during the inflammatory process. The plasma metabolome of AP patients is distinctive, which shows promise for early SAP diagnosis. AP aggravation is linked to the activated ornithine metabolic pathway and its inadequate levels of catabolites in in-situ lesion.

In China, fresh food has always been a top priority and live poultry has been a staple in the diet for thousands of years. As a result, the live poultry market (LPM) remains a popular and important source for purchasing live poultry among the public. However, LPMs also play a crucial role in spreading and retaining highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) due to the high poultry movement and trade volume. Therefore, the preventive behavior of LPM vendors is essential in blocking the transmission of HPAI and reducing occupational exposure. Based on the health belief model, this study utilized structural equation modeling to examine the effect of risk perceptions on preventive behavior among vendors in the live poultry wholesale market (wLPM) and the live poultry retail market (rLPM) in Guangdong Province. The results indicated that perceived severity and perceived benefits positively influenced the wLPM vendors' ability to adopt preventive behavior (i.e., self-efficacy) while perceived barriers negatively affected self-efficacy in both wLPM and rLPM. Moreover, cues to action positively mediated the relationship between perceived severity, perceived benefits, and self-efficacy of wLPM and rLPM vendors. Cues to action also positively mediated the effect of perceived susceptibility among wLPM vendors. To promote preventive behavior among vendors, the market management companies and the government must provide timely and effective HPAI information through various channels and develop differentiated health campaigns according to the market types to raise vendors' awareness about HPAI.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of fertility-preserving treatment for young women with synchronous primary neoplasm of endometrium and ovary. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed eight patients with concurrent primary grade 1 presumed stage IA endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma (EEA) or endometrial atypical hyperplasia (EAH) and primary stage I ovarian tumors who underwent fertility-sparing treatment in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University between April 2016 and December 2022. RESULTS: Synchronous endometrial and ovarian cancers (SEOC) accounted for 50% of these eight patients. The median age of patients was 30.5 years (range, 28-34 years). None of them received chemotherapy. The median treatment time was 4 months (range, 3-8 months). 87.5% (7/8) cases achieved complete response (CR), and the median time to CR was 3.8 months (range, 1.5-7.7 months). Among patients who got CR, none of them showed any signs of recurrence. Pregnancies and successful deliveries were achieved in 4 of 5 patients. Till September 2023, the median follow-up period was 50.5 months (range:15.2-85.2 months). CONCLUSION: Fertility-sparing treatment is feasible for highly selected patients with synchronous neoplasm of the endometrium and ovary, but strict screening and monitoring are mandatory. Though the results of our limited cases are encouraging, long follow-up and more clinical data are required. Enrolled patients must be fully informed of the risks during conservative treatment.

ABSTRACT

Ferroelectret nanogenerator (FENG), renowned for its remarkable electromechanical conversion efficiency and low Young's modulus, has gained significant attention in various acoustic applications. The increasing interest is attributed to the crucial role acoustic devices play in our daily lives. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the advancements made in using FENG for acoustic applications. It elaborates on the operational mechanism of FENG in acoustics, with a special focus on comparing the influence of different fabrication materials and techniques on its properties. This review categorizes acoustic applications of FENG into three primary areas: acoustic sensing, acoustic actuation, and acoustic energy harvesting. The detailed descriptions of FENG's implementations in these areas are provided, and potential directions and challenges for further development are outlined. By demonstrating the wide range of potential applications for FENG, it is shown that FENG can be adapted to meet different individual needs.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) experienced endocrine disorders that may present vascular function changes. This study aimed to classify and predict PCOS by radial pulse wave parameters using machine learning (ML) methods and to provide evidence for objectifying pulse diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). METHODS: A case-control study with 459 subjects divided into a PCOS group and a healthy (non-PCOS) group. The pulse wave parameters were measured and analyzed between the two groups. Seven supervised ML classification models were applied, including K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Voting, and Long Short Term Memory networks (LSTM). Parameters that were significantly different were selected as input features and stratified k-fold cross-validations training was applied to the models. RESULTS: There were 316 subjects in the PCOS group and 143 subjects in the healthy group. Compared to the healthy group, the pulse wave parameters h3/h1 and w/t from both left and right sides were increased while h4, t4, t, As, h4/h1 from both sides and right t1 were decreased in the PCOS group (P < 0.01). Among the ML models evaluated, both the Voting and LSTM with ensemble learning capabilities, demonstrated competitive performance. These models achieved the highest results across all evaluation metrics. Specifically, they both attained a testing accuracy of 72.174% and an F1 score of 0.818, their respective AUC values were 0.715 for the Voting and 0.722 for the LSTM. CONCLUSION: Radial pulse wave signal could identify most PCOS patients accurately (with a good F1 score) and is valuable for early detection and monitoring of PCOS with acceptable overall accuracy. This technique can stimulate the development of individualized PCOS risk assessment using mobile detection technology, furthermore, gives physicians an intuitive understanding of the objective pulse diagnosis of TCM. The demand for pre-made dishes has increased in China. However, a detailed understanding of residents' intention to consume pre-made dishes is lacking in the existing studies. This research aims to investigate the consumer motives and intention to consume pre-made dishes. Through in-depth interviews and analysis, this research explores the factors influencing the residents' intention along the research steps of grounded theory. Fifty-one residents participated in semi-structured interviews via face-to-face or online interviews. Three motives for purchasing pre-made dishes were attitude, subjective norm, and perceived control. These were influenced by external factors, including environmental features and product features. Subjective characteristics are pre-existing characteristics of individuals themselves, including cooking skills, food skills, housework allocation, and eating attitudes, which play a moderating role in the relationship between external factors and consumer motives. Based on the six major categories, this study built a model of the formation mechanism of the consumer intention to consume pre-made dishes. It revealed the psychological attribution of residents' consumption of pre-made dishes. The finding of this study contributes to the understanding of the internal logic of PMDs' consumer intention formation. It would be a guide for researchers to map out appropriate business development strategies, and provide evidence for the government in formulating management policies.

ABSTRACT

The relationship between the type and intensities of lipids of blood and pancreas and the pathological changes in the pancreas during severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) remains unclear. In our study, we employed a rat model of SAP induced through intraperitoneal ornithine injections. We collected serum and pancreas samples at various time points (0-144 h) for histopathological and biochemical assessments, followed by lipidomic analyses using LC-MS/MS or in situ mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) To discern changes over time or at specific points, we employed time-course and univariate analyses for lipid screening, respectively. Our findings indicated that the peak inflammation in the Orn-SAP model occurred within the 24-30 h timeframe, with evident necrosis emerging from 24 h onwards, followed by regeneration starting at 48 h. Time-course analysis revealed an overall decrease in glycerophospholipids (PEs, PCs, LPEs, LPCs), while CEs exhibited an increase within the pancreas. Univariate analysis unveiled a significant reduction in serum TAGs containing 46-51 carbon atoms at 24 h, and CERs in the pancreas significantly increased at 30 h, compared with 0 h. Moreover, a substantial rise in TAGs containing 56-58 carbon atoms was observed at 144 h, both in serum and pancreas. MSI demonstrated the CERs containing saturated mono-acyl chains of 16 and 18 carbon atoms influenced pancreatic regeneration. Tracing the origin of FFAs hydrolyzed from pancreatic glycerophospholipids and serum TAGs during the early stages of inflammation, as well as FFAs utilized for CEs and CERs synthesis during the repair phase, may yield valuable strategies for diagnosing and managing SAP.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate a causal relationship between IBD and multiple kidney diseases using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. METHODS: We selected a group of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) specific to IBD as instrumental variables from a published genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 86,640 individuals of European ancestry. Summary statistics for multiple kidney diseases were obtained from the publicly available GWAS. Genetic data from one GWAS involving 210 extensive T-cell traits was used to estimate the mediating effect on specific kidney disease. Inverse-variance weighted method were used to evaluate the MR estimates for primary analysis. RESULTS: Genetic predisposition to IBD was associated with higher risk of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) (OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.45-2.19), but not membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and urolithiasis. CD4 expression on CD4 + T cell had a significant genetic association with the risk of IgAN (OR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.10-6.72). Additionally, consistent results were also observed when IBD was subclassified as ulcerative colitis (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.10-1.71) and Crohn's disease (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.12-1.68). MR-PRESSO and the MR-Egger intercept did not identify pleiotropic SNPs. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides genetic evidence supporting a positive casual association between IBD, including its subclassification as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and the risk of IgAN. However, no casual association was found between IBD and other types of kidney diseases. Further exploration of IBD interventions as potential preventive measures for IgAN is warranted.

ABSTRACT

With the banning of antibiotic chemical feed additives, multi-functional bioactive feed additives have been extensively sought after by the feed industry. In this study, low-cost and renewable corn cobs were treated with liquid hot water and converted into bioactive xylo-oligosaccharides and L-lactic acid after enzymatic hydrolysis, strain activation, and fermentation under mild conditions, which achieved a full utilization of cellulose and hemicellulose in corn cobs. Simultaneous saccharification fermentation after strain activation with enzymatic hydrolysate delivered the highest conversion rate of glucose to L-lactic acid (93.00 %) and yielded 17.38 g/L L-lactic acid and 2.68 g/L xylo-oligosaccharides. On this basis, batch-feeding fermentation resulted in a 78.03 % conversion rate of glucose to L-lactic acid, 18.99 g/L L-lactic acid, and 2.84 g/L xylo-oligosaccharides. This work not only provided a green and clean bioconversion strategy to produce multi-functional feed additives but can also boost the full utilization of renewable and cheap biomass resources.

ABSTRACT

The impact of vaccination on the outcomes of dialysis patients with Omicron infections in China remains unknown. This study aimed to examine the relationship between vaccination and hospitalization as well as all-cause mortality. We included patients who had undergone maintenance hemodialysis (HD) for at least three months at our center. The follow-up period spanned from December 2022 to February 2023. We assessed the connections between vaccination and hospitalization as well as all-cause mortality using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess the diagnostic accuracy for hospitalization and all-cause mortality. Ultimately, a total of 427 HD patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections were included. The patients had a mean age of 54 years, and 59.4% of them were male. Prior to the investigation, 108 patients had received vaccinations, with 81 of them having completed or received booster vaccinations. Throughout the follow-up period, 81 patients were admitted to the hospital, and 39 patients died. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that vaccination significantly decreased all-cause mortality (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.07-1.94, P = .04). Moreover, completed or booster vaccinations were effective in reducing the hospitalization rate (OR 0.41, 95%CI 0.17-0.99, P = .047). It is noteworthy that both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals experienced mild symptoms, and the hospitalization rates were relatively low in both groups. Despite the reduced pathogenicity of Omicron compared to previous strains in dialysis patients, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, vaccination still provides benefits for improving the prognosis.

ABSTRACT

The placenta is the gatekeeper between the mother and the fetus. Over the first trimester of pregnancy, the fetus is nourished by uterine gland secretions in a process known as histiotrophic nutrition. During the second trimester of pregnancy, placentation has evolved to the point at which nutrients are delivered to the placenta via maternal blood (hemotrophic nutrition). Over gestation, the placenta must adapt to these variable nutrient supplies, to alterations in maternal physiology and blood flow, and to dynamic changes in fetal growth rates. Numerous questions remain about the mechanisms used to transport nutrients to the fetus and the maternal and fetal determinants of this process. Growing data highlight the ability of the placenta to regulate this process. As new technologies and omics approaches are utilized to study this maternofetal interface, greater insight into this unique organ and its impact on fetal development and long-term health has been obtained.

BACKGROUND: Few normative longitudinal hemoglobin data are available to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for anemia among a multiethnic United States pregnant population. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize hemoglobin distributions and prevalence of anemia in a pregnant population receiving care at a large urban medical center. METHODS: A retrospective medical chart review was undertaken in 41,226 uncomplicated pregnancies of 30,603 pregnant individuals who received prenatal care between 2011 and 2020. Mean hemoglobin concentrations and anemia prevalence in each trimester and incidence of anemia during pregnancy in a subset of 4821 women with data in each trimester were evaluated in relation to self-reported race and ethnicity and other possible risk factors. Risk ratios (RRs) of anemia were determined using generalized linear mixed-effects models. Smoothed curves describing changes in hemoglobin across pregnancy were created using generalized additive models. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of anemia was 26.7%. The observed fifth percentiles of the hemoglobin distributions were significantly lower than the United States CDC anemia cutoffs in the second and third trimesters (T3). The RR (95% CI) of anemia were 3.23 (3.03, 3.45), 6.18 (5.09, 7.52), and 2.59 (2.48, 2.70) times higher in Black women than that in White women in each trimester, respectively. Asian women recorded the lowest risk of anemia compared with other racial groups in T3 (compared with White womenRR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.74, 0.96). Hispanic women presented a higher risk of anemia in T3 than non-Hispanic women (RR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.28, 1.45). In addition, adolescents, individuals with higher parity, and those carrying multiple fetuses experienced a higher risk of developing anemia in late gestation. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia was evident in more than one-quarter of a multiethnic United States pregnant population despite current universal prenatal iron supplementation recommendations. Prevalence of anemia was higher among Black women and lowest among Asian and White women.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, according to studies, 90% of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented. Cardiovascular function parameters are an important basis for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The pulse wave also contains a wealth of physiological and pathological information, which can reflect the trend of cardiac function parameters at an early stage, so the measurement and analysis of the pulse wave signal becomes more and more important. The wearable pulse signal acquisition device has gradually become a new trend. In the mobile health scenario, convenient use is the prerequisite for long-term and rapid health monitoring. The data containing diverse pulse wave signals is the basis for obtaining more comprehensive and accurate human physiopathological information. Accurate data analysis and processing is the key to realizing the important goal of cardiovascular health monitoring. OBJECTIVE: Based on the concept of mobile health care, wearable devices are developed to obtain physiological signals. The zero-dimensional model and the optimization algorithm are combined to complete the uncertainty quantification of the microcirculation parameters. Then, a feature set containing the cardiovasvular parameters can be constructed. The machine learning algorithm can be used to build a model that can accurately realize cardiovascular disease identification. METHODS: This paper adopts laboratory-developed equipment to acquire the wrist pulse wave and fingertip volume pulse wave. A total of 323 samples were collected from healthy populations, hypertensive patients and patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). The pulse blood flow model in fingertip microcirculation is established, and the uncertainty quantification of model parameters is completed based on slime mold algorithm (SMA). After comparing and analyzing the performance of four algorithms on pulse wave classification, the identification model of cardiovascular diseases is established based on the microcirculatory characteristic parameter set and random forest algorithm (RF). RESULTS: RF showed good classification performance among the four classification algorithms. The identification accuracy of the model built on the microcirculatory characteristic parameter set and RF algorithm all reached more than 88%. The highest recognition accuracy was 95.51% for coronary heart disease samples, 92.11% for healthy samples, and 88.55% for hypertensive samples. It can be seen that the model based on RF algorithm has a good ability to distinguish the characteristic parameters in different cardiovascular health states. CONCLUSIONS: The wearable device designed in this paper can facilitate the daily health monitoring of cardiovascular disease. By using the combination of the physical model and machine learning model, the uncertainty quantification of microcirculation parameters and the identification of cardiovascular disease was finally completed. The recognition model based on machine learning provides a new idea and method for the research of cardiovascular health monitoring through pulse waves.
